Mountains and Lakes

The wintery snowscapes and mountains in the western United States are most foreign to our natural climate on the East Coast, yet are some of my favorite shots to create. Backpacking in the wilderness, sometimes under harsh conditions, searching for the time and light to come together just right, is what makes photographing these areas worthwhile to me.

Wild Alaska
The jagged icy peaks of Alaska's Chugach Mountains emerge from the clouds, photographed from high above.
Exodus
Two 12,000 foot peaks in the eastern Alaska Range framed by a grove of wildflowers at sunset.
Transcendence
Beautiful sunet light reflects off a large lenticular cloud, illuminating the valley and river below.
And Winter Came
The first light of day illuminates Mt. Fitz Roy on a cold, snowy morning.

A lenticular cloud forms over this unnamed jagged peak in the late afternoon.
Unbroken
Mountain peak enveloped with incredible atmospheric conditions on the shoulder of a storm in the Coastal Mountains.
Cold Light of Night
One of many unforgettable auroral displays over the a frozen lake and majestic peaks of the Yukon Territory in early winter.
Mezzanotte
Wildflowers on a 5000 ft. ridge across this glaciated valley in the wilderness of the eastern Alaska Range. I photographed this scene at sunset (around midnight), then hiked back to camp to be ready for a 4 a.m. sunrise!
Receding
A stream of aquamarine glacial runoff leads to one of the most photogenic mountains I have ever seen, photographed here in soft mid morning light. This scene melted into a pile of rubble in the summer sun just the next day.
Serenity
Beams of light shoot across a hazy valley in the wilderness of the eastern Alaska Range, complemented here by flowers and a beautiful sunset.
Sonata
A patch of wild lupines atop a ridge of lush meadows during a vibrant sunset.
Subzero
These leading lines created by freezing conditions and snowdrift just under the surface of a frozen lakeshore provide the perfect foreground to an explosive display of aurora in the sky. With wind chill, the temperature was near -15F at night.

The Dreamer Awakens
A stream of snow melt formed a nice S-curve, and as the sun set the clouds parted to reveal the mountain.
Resurgence
A natural S-curve created by ice and blowing snow lead to a beautiful sunstar and colorful sky behind Shark’s Tooth, reflected in a frozen lake beneath.
Frozen in Time
Icicles and a frozen landscape frame the aurora exploding in the sky, shot from the base of Mt. Monolith in the Tombstone Mountains.
Morning Glory
A lone cactus catches sunrise light amidst the rocky landscape of California's Alabama Hills, as the alpenglow illuminates Lone Pine peak in the distance.
Faraway
Glaciers converge at the foot of Mt. Hess as the rising sun filters through the clouds.
Total Eclipse of the Night
A small stream leads through the otherwise frozen landscape, punctuated with icicles and ice bells, towards this unnamed peak in Canada’s far north.
